Engine/Ignition information
Sent: Nov 08, 2004: The Renix fuel injection was used on the non-HO 4.0L from 87-90 and used a knock sensor so the computer could adjust timing to control pinging. This means it should be able to compensate for lower octane fuel without detonation. - Mike R

AW4 info and shift/lockup mod (wagoneers.com) (bigoffroad.com) (go.jeep-xj.info).

About the AW4 shift mods, xjjb4x4(at)yahoo.com says:
Although the one from Wagoneers.com has the diagrams that I used on mine, the go.jeep-xj.info has some great pics. Jeepin.com used to have the article that I used but was scared off by the outfit that makes the high dollar gismo. It was not difficult at all, just double check the wire coming off the TCU. My FSM had it labeled wrong on one page and right on another ('92).
I strongly suggest against the TC modification that might be on these. If left unlocked and forgotten it will overheat the trans. My first trans rebuild didn't take care of the TC and I smoked my trans on the first long trip I made. ...long and complicated story.

Transfer Case information
Command-Trac NP231 (2-4-N-L) (I've got this one)
Select-Trac NP242 (2-4-4-N-L)
Quadra-Trac N?249 (4-N-L) (ZJ only) '93-'95 has a "soft" transfer case, '96-'98 has a "hard" front/rear connection in the TC)
Quadra-Trac II NV247 (4-N-L) (on the ZJ 1999-on)

Data tag on my old transfer case: Model 231 J, Ass'y No. 5300 8208, Serial No. 6 8 90 2, Ratio 272
Data tag on my new transfer case: Model 231 D, Ass'y No. 5210 5022AB, Serial No. 9 25 00 C1, Ratio 272

Axle information
XJ - Dana 30 front, Dana 35C rear (mine is the c-clip version)
ZJ - Dana 30 front, Dana 35C or Dana 44 (aluminum) rear
Note: "C" in "Dana 35C" does not stand for c-clip. "C" stands for Custom because the axle came incomplete (custom) to Chrysler from Dana.
Dana 35 c-clip axle removal information

XJ axle widths (from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface): 60 3/4" front, 60 3/4" rear.
Spring perch width is 43 3/4" center-to-center.
Dana 35C differential hangs 3 5/8" below the axle tubes.

84-99 XJ and 86-92 MJ (Comanche) have reverse cut Dana 30 front axles (high pinion).
99-00 XJs have a standard cut Dana 30 front axle (low pinion).

Chrysler 8 1/4" rear diff is a C-clip axle:
'91 - '96 are 27 spline, 1.17" dia shafts
97 - up are 29 spline, 1.21" dia shafts

Dana 44s are mostly 31 spline with 1.31"dia shafts

Gears
Dana 30 (front) - 3.55 (39-11) (3.54 (46-13)?) upgrade to 4.10 (41-10)
Dana 35 (rear) - 3.55 (39-11) upgrade to 4.10 (41-10)
Dana 44 - 4.09 (45-11) gears out of a '73 Bronco
Ring gear markings - 9 13 72 DANA 18520 A3E61 45 11, 535
Pinion gear markings - 11 13 72, H DANA 32073 45-11 A3R34, 535 (plus other odd markings)

Gear set up: The two methods I have seen for pinion depth are using a pinion depth tool to get the 2.625 + the marking on the end of the pinion. The other seems to be to use the setup on the old gears, (number on the pinion) and add or subtract shims to equal the numbers on the new pinion. (source)

Diff/Gear/Ratio information

Gear ratio calculated by ring teeth divided by pinion teeth:
4.09 - Dana 44 (45-11)
4.10 - Dana 30 and many others (41-10)
4.11 - Ford 9" (37-9)

ARB Spring/Shock information
Rear leaf spring rates:
JC1A 3" pack: 148 lb/inch, add about 20% for JCXL AAL
JC2A 3" pack: 137 lb/inch lightly loaded, 257 lb/inch when heavily loaded. The JC2A has a small helper leaf that is curved the other way and is not in the picture till you start loading it.

Shocks:
Rear N36: 562mm (22.1") extended, 342mm (13.5") collapsed
Rear N36L: 622mm (24.5") extended, 366mm (14.4") collapsed
Front N35: 568mm (22.4") extended, 348mm (13.7") collapsed
Front N35L: 678mm (26.7") extended, 392mm (15.4") collapsed

OMEJC1A spring rate 148lbs/inch. 3" height. 5 leaves in the pack. Free camber 230mm.
