Cherokee AW4 Transmission

Here's some information on my Cherokee XJ automatic transmission. Mine is the AW4.

What is this Transmission?

The AW4 was made by Aisin. The metal tag on the right side of the transmission reads:

Aisin AW Co., LTD.
Model no. 30-40LE
Serial no.
90D R 61414

So it's also called (stamped on the side) the Aisin 30-40LE. The bold text is printed on the tag; non-bold is stamped.

I've also seen this transmission listed (on the evil internet) as the Aisin-Warner AW4. Maybe "AW" stands for Aisin-Warner. Maybe the "4" stands for four-speed.

When purchasing a gasket and filter from NAPA, I discovered that the AW4 is a variant of the Toyota A340, called the A340H. My guess is that it really isn't an A340H. It's just that a number of transmissions are in the same family and so have the same gasket and filter. Here's some more info from Greg Freidman about transmissions. The "D" and "P" must mean the number of disks and plates.

Transmission information from Terry Howe's JeepTech.

AW4: The AW4 four speed automatic transmission was used in 1987 to 1990 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), & Jeep Comanche with 2.5L & 4.0L engines. The AW4 was also used in 1991 through 1992 Jeep Comanche & 1991 through 1998 Jeep Cherokee & 1993 through 1993.5 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0L engines.

Here's a post from Greg Friedman regarding the AW4/A340 comparision:

... I have confirmed that the A340 is the same transmission as the AW4. It's used on Toyota 4runners, p/u's, older Supras and Lexus. Also used on Troopers and others.

It's NOT A TOYOTA TRANSMISSION. Yes it's used in them but it is made by Aisin/Warner (Aisin of Japan and Warner Gear from the US).
