A brilliant second movie from the director of Strictly Ballroom. Set in a modern-day 'Verona Beach,' with Shakespeare's original language trimmed yet otherwise intact, this is looking to be the Movie of the Year. My son Sean loved it, and we're making plans to see it again soon. It's not often that you hear twelve-year-olds saying, "Hey, Dad, let's go listen to some late-16th-century prose! Also, that Juliet's a babe!" PG-13.
"Frankly, Tom Chappell, I'm still skeptical. Wouldn't I do better just to wait for it to come out on video?"
No! Look, you can also read the review in which Kenneth (I Hate Everything) Turan, the L. A. Times film critic, calls Romeo & Juliet "irresistible," but be warned that the review contains some spoilers. (My old friend Cary Coutant asked me, "What kind of spoilers could there possibly be? 'They die at the end?' or maybe, 'They don't?'" No. Excellent guesses though, and I admit that it's a puzzle. See the movie and find out, is my advice).
P.S. The truth is that Sean never said that part about Juliet. Actually, I said that part.
This was, of course, a thoroughly enjoyable picture, but almost even more satisfying to my nerdly temperament are the surprisingly-large number of goofs that it contains. PG.
