What'll she do, wide open? Hold two people and lots of luggage in its roomy front and rear trunks.

Excerpts:

Chassis number 006 sat washed, fueled and waiting, ready for a romp through Germany's Odenwald. Autobahn and country beckoned...

...Only 42 months have passed since the concept car made its debut at the 1993 Detroit auto show and caught the fancy of practically everyone...

...[Designer] Grant Larson confided that his main inspiration was the Porsche RSK Spyder...

...true to the Porsche tradition , the ignition key is still on the left...

...the Type 986 (as the factory and Porsche purists call it) is 314 lb. lighter that the 911. And structurally, 20 to 30 percent stiffer - despite its being a roadster...

...Soon the speedometer needle... was stuck at 240 km/h (149 mph), the factory's advertised top speed...

...the Boxster can reach 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, about 0.7 sooner that factory claims...

...With its longer wheelbase (5.7 in. greater than the 911's)... the Boxster felt rock-steady...

...Porsche brakes get high marks and the Boxster's are true to form...

...Rolling up... an hour behind schedule, I... quip: "We took the scenic route." As you would in a car that makes you want to drive on and on.
