Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires

Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Finally, my Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires arrive (May 9, 2000)... an agonizing eight months after they are first reviewed on the JeepWire by David Gray. He tested them at the August, 1999 Goodyear Rubicon demo and Sierra Trek 1999. The MT/R tires are a huge improvement in both looks and performance over my original wimpy tires. I'm easily walking up previously difficult trails. Awesome. (By "walking up" I mean "driving slowly with no slippage or other trouble.") See the JeepWire review here.

While waiting for Roger at The Tire Store to mount the new MT/Rs, I test fit a 35" Super Swamper. I don't think they'll work for me... at least not until I add an additional 6" of lift like JeepWire XJ editor Bart Jacobs. I couldn't even get them into the wheel well!

Here you can see Roger mounting one of the tires. In the background you can see the old and new tires mounted. It was gratifying that the XJ needed to be jacked up higher to remount the tires. 31x10.50 isn't huge, but it's a major improvement for me.

35" Super Swampers? I don't think so. (I'm not Bart, you know.) Roger's in the groove. Mounting the MT/R. Roger bolts 'em up. My grin widens. The MT/R tires on the Cherokee.

I also considered two other tires. Many people run the BFGoodrich MT. The old Goodyear MT had proponents, but it was discontinued and replaced by the MT/R. See the Tire Rack survey of M/T tires.

If you're driving on the pavement a lot, consider getting an Off-Road All-Terrain. Take a look at the Tire Rack survey of A/T tires, but be warned that the survey is not scientific. People tend to rate their tires high, even if they suck. You'll give up a little off-road performance for a big on-road improvement.
